MA - 2019 MassHOPE Convention: Faith in the Trenches (Joshua 1:9)
Presented by: Massachusetts Homeschool Organization of Parent EducatorsDads and moms, in all the busyness of life and swell of expert advice, we’ve forgotten the fundamental truths of homeschooling and family. In short, we’ve forgotten why we do what we do. We have plenty of “how-tos” but have forgotten the “why-tos” and it evidences itself in our lack of joy of homeschooling, family, and parenting. Join funny guy and family man, Todd Wilson, as he sets the stage for a great homeschool convention and the best year ever as he brings us back to the basics of what we believe about family and homeschooling. You’re not going to want to miss this for the world.

Bearing responsibility for the education of a child is a high calling, one that brings with it great challenge and the potential for great anxiety. In this talk, Brian Phillips looks to Scripture, Church history, and classic literature, drawing practical lessons to encourage the hearts of educators in the trenches. The struggle will continue, but there is strength available to face it.
Your house is a disaster, your kids seem out of control, and you wonder how you’ll ever make it through another day of school. Your “get up and go” has “gotten up and went”. You used to think homeschooling was the best thing since sliced bread, but now you’re feeling like burnt toast. Take heart – you’re not alone! No one homeschools because it’s easy. You do it because you believe it is best. But there are times when you need to be reminded once again why it’s best. Join me as we do just that. You’ll laugh and be encouraged in the toughest job you’ll ever…love.

We like things nice and neat, orderly, with predictable outcomes. Often OUR plans don’t ‘come together’ as hoped. Instead, they fall apart and leave us dumbfounded and stunned. I’ve talked to plenty of homeschooling parents who were sold a plan. They followed it and later stood before me with tears in their eyes because the plan “didn’t come together.” “We did everything THEY said to do.” “We didn’t have TV…we homeschooled…we ate organic…we only wore dresses…we sheltered and protected….we did courtship…they played the violin…we emphasized the classics…we never missed family devotions…we emphasized purity…we birthed our children at home…we had a home business” and on and on the list goes. They feel betrayed, angry, and lost….and their children are starting ‘tell all’ websites!! Years ago when I heard their sob stories I wondered what they had done wrong. I believed they must have gotten the WRONG plan…or didn’t carry the plan out according to instructions. While some of that may be true, I know NOW that sometimes our plans don’t come together because God has a DIFFERENT PLAN. Join me as we take an honest and humorous look at plans, why they fall apart and what to do when they have.

Often our aim for our children’s development is to see them “above-average” or “better than most.” But, when the Truth of our super-conquering Jesus Christ is infused into the training of our children, nothing short of “children that change the world” will do. In this session, Eric Ludy will pass along both a vision and a practical platform for beginning to think and parent with even greater boldness and purpose. From teaching phonics to graduating teens, from refereeing fights to nurturing faith, our lives as homeschooling parents run the gamut from the very mundane to the very meaningful. In the midst of the mind-boggling demands of homeschooling and everyday life, we constantly need to remind ourselves that our work as homeschooling moms and dads has tremendous Kingdom significance. Using the lessons of Scripture and history, this workshop will expand your vision of how God is using the homeschool movement, as well as your specific work as a homeschooling parent, to usher in spiritual and educational revival. There’s much talk about Christian worldview. Never before have Christian teens received so much training in developing a proper worldview. But something seems dreadfully wrong. The truth is…there doesn’t seem to be much difference between “our teens” and “their teens.” Honestly, there sometimes isn’t much difference between “our adults” and “their adults.” That’s about to change. Join Todd as he talks about a very REAL Christian Worldview. Todd isn’t going to give you a list of dos and don’ts, but will challenge you right where you live. Together, we just might change the world. You’ll want to be here.

Many Christian classical educators started on their journey through Dorothy Sayers’s 1947 essay, The Lost Tools of Learning, which, in recent decades, sparked interest in the Trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and an attempt to recover education as it once was. But, Dorothy Sayers’s presentation of the Trivium was intended as a beginning, not an end. This talks looks into the Trivium, its educational significance, and its often overlooked theological connections.

You may even learn the secret to making your wife deliriously happy, your home a quiet and peaceful kingdom, your children rich beyond measure, and your father-in-law in awe of your great accomplishments. The word “freedom” isn’t just for ol’ graying hippies and revolutionary wannabes? It’s a biblical concept and at the core of what it means to be an American and a home- schooler. How’d we get our homeschool freedoms? Why should we care? Are we really free? How might we lose this liberty? What are the enemies? You need to know the core principles of educational freedom and why we must strive to keep or expand that liberty. Dr. Ray has been in the battle for over 30 years

Ever feel lost, wandering, ineffective, or downright wimpy? Ever wonder where your roots really go? This session is aimed especially at youth but is for all ages, single or married

Many parents fall prey to their own insecurities and the critics’ darts when their children reach age 14 and they consider abandoning home-based education. Professionals, institutional schooling, public school enticements, misperceptions of reality, and the world’s opinion muddy the waters. Dr. Ray will rally parents’ spirits and harden their resolve to continue homeschooling for the long term to reap the harvest of its excellent fruits
The deception of the Enemy in our modern world seems overwhelming at times, especially for our young people. Is there scientific evidence for God? Does faith deny logic and reason? Chuck tackles these questions and offers solid answers through practical apologetics. Equip your youth using the synergy between scripture, science, technology, logic and reason to stand against the onslaught of deception the world throws at them.

Explore topics such as carbon dating, tree rings, ice cores, population statistics, astronomy, erosion and more to see how they all support an earth that could not possibly be millions and billions of years old. Shows how the Bible isn't against science but rather science gives credible support for the Bible and a young earth

How did our wonderful home-trained son go off the rails? He forsook his faith and all he was taught. Lies consumed our relationship. He plunged into the lifestyle of worldly passions and fell into the deep end of the legal system. We lost our son... but God! This prodigal came back to the kingdom of Heaven taking it by force and revenging his former disobedience. The impossible happened in our son. That son is Jake MacAulay, and he’s here to share his story. Parents, there is hope.

All textbooks and no fun make many homeschoolers want to throw schooling out the window! Dara will share ideas of carrying on the spontaneity of homeschooling fun through high school without compromising the knowledge needed to get into college. She’ll inspire you to think outside the textbook box and enjoy the last few years your teen will be at home.
Lures abound to sidetrack homeschooling parents. One such lure is the promise of “free,” state-run, “home” school programs to “help” you educate your children. It is paramount to consider who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Dr. Ray will challenge you to think through this issue and provide you with information and insight that will help you promote the concept of the separation of school and state. This has emerged as one of the most important issues with which homeschoolers must grapple
Mar. 2, 2019
"Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6) has often been misunderstood as assuring parents that their prodigals will return to the Lord. However, the verse is more properly translated, "Train... according to their bent, or in keeping with their temperament...". Explore how understanding the four basic temperaments can help you better parent your children.
You've schooled and fed them, wiped their tears, and showed them the way. You’ve introduced them to Jesus and encouraged them to have a relationship with Him. Now, how do you let them go? Dara will address concerns of teens and parents as they enter this next phase of life. There is a way to prepare your teen for what is to come and to prepare your heart as well
Mar. 2, 2019

Twenty-six hundred years ago, three teenagers stood in defiance to a powerful king. In our world of entertainment-minded youth, are we doing enough to prepare them for the possibility of challenging days ahead? Chuck encourages parents and teens to ‘Know What You Believe’, ‘Know What’s Coming’, and ‘Know What You Will Do’ so if the day should come, we will stand and not bow!

America’s exceptionalism encompasses great diversity of race, ethnicity, and religion, and has benefited every American. For several decades of indoctrination in both education and politics, we have been taught America's flaws but little of its matchless benefits. Five principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence have produced blessings for America. Discover these principles and learn what every citizen can do to restore America.

There is a mighty clash of worldviews going on all around us, and there is no way to escape. Educating our children at home will only postpone the inevitable. Will our children engage their culture as lambs going to slaughter, or as sheep among wolves, being "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16)?
America has developed a severe case of historical amnesia. Not only have we forgotten how we became the most stable and prosperous nation on the globe, but now we often feel compelled to apologize to the world just for being Americans. Five specific historical attacks launched over the past century have now found a permanent home in American media and education. Learn about the five attacks and how to quickly identify and negate their harmful influence. Preserve the understanding of America’s greatness for generations to come.
The courts and secularists have weaponized the Constitution to limit public religious expression rather than protect it. They have convinced many Americans that the Constitution is godless. Seven specific parts of the Constitution establish its generally religious and explicitly Christian nature. Learn about these important clauses deliberately ignored by today's secular-minded scholars and judges. It's time for us to know and help restore the original intent of the Constitution.

The only thing worse in our culture today than the way men view themselves as husbands is the way they view themselves as fathers. Men have no idea how important this role is in the development of their children physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Grasp a bigger vision for a father’s role and its importance in the grand scheme of things. The family is a hub of gospel-centered activity that serves as the foundation upon which the faith of the next generation is built (Deut. 6:6-7; cf. Eph. 6:4).
Hear surprisingly bold historical declarations from U. S. Presidents across two centuries on how the Bible shaped American society and culture along with unequivocal evidence of its benefits to daily life. In the past 50 years, the knowledge of this influence has diminished, especially within the faith community. In fact, most Christians today have not read through the entire Bible even once, and have thus accepted the modern secularist doctrine of compartmentalization. Discover the true and positive influences of the Bible on American life.
Jun. 23, 2018
One of the most glaring shortcomings in the home education movement has been the absence of male involvement. This session offers a biblical look at the father's true role in the home and why it is absolutely essential to the successful home education of the children. Dr. Baucham will address several issues including feminism and hyper-patriarchy, which have brought imbalance and disorder into many Christian homes. He will disclose how the gospel addresses these issues for ultimate hope and healing.

Find some practical tools you can implement to help keep your children from getting caught in the snare of escapism.

At fourteen years old I faced an episode of doubt in my life that lasted for fourteen years. Because of it I could not claim God’s Word as infallible nor witness boldly to anyone seeking answers about Jesus Christ. God preserved my faith through it all, but much was lost to those years lived in flimsy faith. It doesn’t have to be so for your child. As parents we have an obligation to equip, prepare, and launch our children into the world fully capable of standing against the spiritual attacks and waves of doubt that they will often face. Discover how to discern if doubt is something your child is dealing with and learn a few basic principles on how to help them overcome and live a faith-filled life, even as a youth.

If we homeschool simply to achieve high academic marks, we are squandering the opportunity to influence our children for Christ. Character healthy leaders are those children who have learned to elevate virtues above feelings. If we spend our homeschooling hours simply on academics and activities, we may win the praise of man, but we risk losing the hearts of our children. In our few short years with our children we must focus on the first things first, and character is always the first thing! In this conference, Megan, a homeschooling mother of eight, will challenge your homeschoolers to use every opportunity to teach their children to serve God by loving others and to love others by faithfully serving God.

High school math at home can be an intimidating endeavor. How are you going to teach your kids algebra, trigonometry, or even calculus? Further, will they be prepared by graduation for college level work? In this session Kathryn provides practical solutions to some of the common pitfalls of teaching math at home. She also shows you how to harness the strengths of homeschooling to create a competitive high school program. Whether your child is STEM-minded or focused on the humanities, you’ll leave this session with a concrete four-year plan. Kathryn is a homeschool graduate with ten years’ experience as a high school math teacher; in addition, she has tutored homeschool students in math since high school.

Most homeschooling parents feel uneasy when planning math courses for their children. Lots of parents say, "We learned our math a long time ago," or "We learned it a different way," or maybe "We learned it not at all". How can we know if the methods we are using will achieve the desired results in our students? In this workshop Tom Clark will expose ten common myths about teaching math and then counter those myths with solid, practical help for parents. You will also leave with a checklist of items which can be used to determine the best math course for your students.

It is amazing to study both history and the Bible and see the things young people accomplished. Teens such as Joash, Josiah, David, Alexander Hamilton, John Quincy Adams, David Farragut, William McGuffey, “Stonewall” Jackson, Charles XII, Peter the Great, Evan Roberts, Bob Jones, Sr., Vance Havner and others accomplished much in their teen years. We don’t have this in our day because we have no vision for it. In Luke 2 Jesus, by age twelve, had developed seven key qualities that parents should seek to develop in their pre-teen children.

Language is an amazing grace from God and a gift to steward and revel in. Skill and confidence in crafting words into stories and arguments will open doors for your children and lead them into their futures. Here’s how to cast a vision, encourage and support the journey, capture each child’s unique writer’s voice, and delight in the prose and poetry your kids produce. You may find yourself inspired to write as well.
Secrets have the potential to greatly bless your life. Secrets build relationships by binding hearts with those with whom you share your secrets. But secrets also have the power to bring you into bondage. Walls may be erected by secrets that are kept from mates or parents. Your most dangerous sin is probably your secret sin. Because sin is a thought before it becomes an action, parents should daily ask children what secret temptations they are facing. We tend to share secrets we should not share and to not share secrets we should share. Parents miss a great opportunity to bind hearts with their children when they allow others to share the secrets of life itself with their children.

Many good families have lost their children because the parents did not communicate clearly in their spirits to their children that their priorities were in the proper order that God meant them to be. Wrong priorities create problems all by themselves that can only be corrected by getting priorities right. The proper question to ask in relation to priorities is, "WHO is a man's top priority, as far as life relationships are concerned?" This message, profusely illustrated, is an “eye-opener” to many parents about how important it is that their children be only after God and their mates in their order of priorities. It also encourages parents to do whatever they have to do to keep those priorities right.

Kindness is a powerful force that emanates from God himself that will transform your life and the lives of those around you if you will use it properly and consistently. Proverbs 31 referred to the “law of kindness.” A law sets parameters. The “law of kindness” says that you and I should not leave the parameters of kindness in the words we say or the way we say them. God, who is always kind, uses his kindness to win our hearts, and few things are as effective to reach the hearts of children as parents consistently being kind. Some of the most powerful stories in the Bible and in human life are stories where people used the power of kindness to repay kindnesses shown to them.

Don’t be surprised when folks question your right or ability to homeschool. They did the same to Christ. “And say unto him, 'By what authority doest thou these things? And who gave thee this authority to do these things?'” (Mark 11:28) Our authority is not of the government or in an accreditation agency; our authority is from Christ. Are you competent to homeschool? If you are in Christ, you are!

Most parents “let go” of a rebellious child when they should not, and don’t “let go” when they should. Love must be strong enough to deal with rebellion and also strong enough to “let go” when unstoppable consequences start to come. Every Christian may profit from hearing these principles, but they are especially helpful for parents of rebellious children 18 or older.
Shaped by our personality types, grades have the power to motivate some and destroy others. There is a spiritual war being waged for our families. Our enemy is strong, and we are in his territory. Dad, if you don’t fight for your family, no one else will. When a soldier is in enemy territory he is alert, focused, and purposeful about every move he makes with weapons ready. Only you stand between the enemy and your family, for God has given you the authority and the responsibility to stop him from destroying your marriage and your children. This takes courage, but your calling is noble…it is God's call to arms. Chuck offers straight answers and practical help for dads who are looking to protect, train, equip, and launch soldiers for Jesus Christ.

Second mile leaders are those counter-intuitive servants of God who earn the right to be heard by developing a consistent love of virtue, a disciplined approach to gratification, and a submissive love for the authority of God’s Word. Male leadership is essential to the success of marriages, families, the church, and society. This session will teach men to earn the right to be heard, prefer pProactivity, reject reactivity, learn to elevate virtues above feelings, build moral muscle, seek forgiveness, and develop a finisher’s attitude.

Honor is a lost concept in the western world. Yet it is a biblical mandate. How important is honor? What does it mean to honor God? What does it mean to honor your father and mother? And how do those concepts play out in daily life? Even if mom covers all of the academics of homeschooling, dad’s role is crucial. What is that role and how does honor play a part in it? Come and take a peek into the life of the Razvi family and hear what a blessing honor has been for this family of 15.

We are called to disciple our children. But what a beautiful thing it is to get to the place where our children are wishing to be discipled by us, coming to us to ask for prayer and counsel over sin struggles in their hearts. Do you know God’s vision for your family? Do your children know it? Are you headed there together? Are you connected to your child’s heart? If your child is a toddler, now is the time to begin paving the way to family unity. If he is already a teenager, don’t miss this workshop. Age-appropriate chores, serving the elderly, baking for “new mothers”, tutoring in the inner-city, and taking the Good News of Jesus Christ to a waiting world are just a few of the practical ideas you will leave with when attending this inspiring workshop based on the life of Jesus.

Embrace Your Journey - Show More
No matter how picture perfect someone’s Facebook post appears, everyone has difficulties. These are part of your homeschool journey. It’s easy to let the issue of the day, or year, become such an emotional energy drain that we end up feeling deflated and defeated, unable to experience joy. God’s Word promises that if we will look at our unique trials through His eyes and allow Him access to our heart, mind and spirit, we will find that our problem is really God’s gateway to peace.

Education Savings Accounts for elementary and secondary schooling is a new tax-funded student in the neighborhood. Even some so-called conservatives are promoting them, and “choice advocates” are promoting them. Dr. Ray will use a biblical perspective, a freedom-loving perspective, and historical research evidence to explain why ESA-tax- funded schooling is a bad idea. And Dr. Ray will challenge you and encourage you that private, parent-led, home-based education, with the volitional help of others, is the best way to execute God’s principles and expand the “education freedom space” in America.

Music has become such an ever-present influence in our daily lives, we seldom stop to consider what effect it has on us. Man has changed over the last 100 years from being music makers to music consumers. We gradually lost control over, and even awareness of, our auditory environment. In what way is music beneficial to our bodies and minds? Can it actually be harmful? Scientific research provides some astounding answers to such questions—indeed, facts that must not be ignored.

In our few short years with our children we must focus on the first things first and character is always the first thing! In this workshop, Megan, a homeschooling mother of eight, will challenge your homeschoolers to use every opportunity to teach their children to serve God by loving others and to love others by faithfully serving God.

Women thrive on relationships! But are our relationships glorifying to God or do they draw our hearts away from faithful obedience to the Lord and His Word? Megan will encourage women to use their relationships to encourage, edify, and exhort one another while also challenging women to examine their friendships and to structure Christ-centered, God honoring, faith deepening relationships.
