INCH 2024 Building the Future

Presented by: Michigan Christian Homeschool Network

Under the new covenant, Christ is our Sabbath rest. But we still need physical rest, all the more in an ever-hustling culture. Add to this the demands of homeschooling and parenting, and we're left wondering where rest fits in! This session teaches you that rest never "fits in"; you plan your life around it. Learn how to observe a day of rest as a Christian, homeschooling family without becoming legalistic; what activities to integrate into a restful day; how to observe sabbath with shift work; and more.

There are four words that if understood correctly will help you to navigate the debate that rages around Genesis, our origins, and the Flood. These four words will help your children be better apologists for the Faith.

Listening and reading well, speaking and writing clearly, and thinking and debating effectively are abilities that most parents hope to cultivate in their children. With that goal in mind, Andrew Pudewa explores various environments and activities that accelerate the development of these language skills, beginning with the youngest students and continuing into the high school years.

As a homeschool dad responsible for my family's internet safety, I've got a major advantage over most parents: I've been a professional computer programmer for nearly 20 years. And I literally wrote my own parental controls app because I wasn't satisfied with the available options. Not everyone can (or will want to) replicate all the steps I've taken, but sometimes just hearing a detailed breakdown and retrospective can help parents gain valuable insights and inspiration to tailor their own approach to internet safety for their families. Join me as I delve into a case study of the specific measures I've tried (and rejected) over the years, and get a detailed description of how one homeschool family has navigated internet safety with kids ranging in age from 7 to 18. We'll cover parenting issues, home network, parental controls, phones, and more.

Many of us started this homeschooling journey thinking this was going to be "fun." You envisioned yourself teaching your children and smiling through each day. Then something happened: You stopped smiling. There’s a reason for that and some things you can do to bring back those smiles, not only for yourself but for your children, as well. During our family night time together we’re going to talk about the smile stealers and smile makers in your homeschooling world... and get everyone smiling again. Because you have a lot to smile about!!!

Like you, when we began our homeschooling journey we asked ourselves, “Will we be able to teach them all they need to know for success?” There were so many options and subjects to teach them. They were loaned to us to us knowing almost NOTHING and we were expected to fill up their noggins and prepare them for adulthood. Little did we know then that homeschooling turned out to be not only what we taught them…but what THEY taught US. Never would we have believed how God would use homeschooling to teach us what he needed us to know as parents, homeschoolers, and as His children. So join me for an intimate time of sharing and laughing at the lessons my children taught me. My hope is that you’ll start to view your homeschool day less as a time to teach and muscle through... but as a gift.

How do you know that you are doing enough? The pressure to do it right, not mess up your kids, and fill in all the gaps is coming from all sides-- often to the detriment of our children. This session is all about permission: permission to make homeschooling what it needs to be for you, to raise out-of-the-box thinkers, to skip that lesson, and to refuse to settle. If this question has been plaguing you, then this session will remind you that you don't have to aim for the national average... you can choose extraordinary!! Raise world changers!

We're all set. We've got the curriculum, the co-op, and the extra-curricular activities. The days shape up nicely, when they do shape up nicely... but what about Christ? Have we neglected the primary reason for homeschooling? In this presentation, Meeke and Wil encourage parents to check the heartbeat of their homeschool. The end of homeschooling isn't homeschooling or even education!

How does theology impact your homeschool? In more ways than you think! In this session look at how our theology (our view of God, salvation, and Christian identity) consciously and unconsciously impacts how we educate our children and how to make sure the things we believe about God align with His Word.

The Judge's premise is that we as a country have strayed far from what our Founding Fathers intended, and that the fundamental, underlying reason for that is that we have lost God. Modern-day America is seeking to banish God from our society, and it has led to the mess in which we now find ourselves. Hear the contrast of what the signer said with an example from modern American life, and pose the question, What would [that signer] think of where we are today?

We've all suffered frustration about writing assignments. Either on the receiving end, or perhaps now on the giving end, there can be a few distinctly discouraging aspects to teaching and being taught writing. The tough questions include: What do l correct and how do I give a grade? How much help is too much? Isn't the assignment clear enough? Why don't students find their own errors? Learn and avoid four teaching mistakes that contribute to this frustration: overcorrecting, holding back help, unclear assignments, and over-expectation.

Gone are the days when people would choose a career and stick with it for life. Many careers these days last less than three years and the majority of 20-year-olds will have four career changes within that decade. In fact, it is likely that the careers they will have, haven't even been invented yet. How are we supposed to prepare our homeschooled children for a world we can't predict? Lean research backed ways to ensure your homeschooler is prepared for an uncertain future.

Today, many of us have an intuitive sense that major changes are coming, that soon our world may be very different in ways not necessarily convenient or comfortable. But at the same time, we must wake up each day and live as though things will continue on pretty much as they are. Resolving this cognitive dissonance requires that we carefully contemplate our circumstances because we truly are in a cultural war, fighting the "non-gospel" of aesthetic and moral relativism on three fronts - personal, familial, and social. What should our priorities be, and how can we prepare our children to be "culture warriors?"

Each student is unique. Since parent educators are tutors, they are able to adapt to the needs of their individual child. Find out what they know, and begin there. Giving your children a firm foundation in math will equip them to succeed at every level of math. They are not behind, they are where they are.

SmartPhones, X-Boxes, Playstations, online gaming... Facebook, InstaGram, SnapChat, TikTok, and all the other social media platforms- They have changed the way we live, have fun, and interact. Children silently glued to screens for hours have replaced laughter and creativity in our homes. They beg to play, whine when they can't, and even lie about the time they've spent on "the gadget". Teens, pre-teens, and even their parents, spend many of their waking hours tweeting, texting, chatting, FaceTiming, and "snapping." Today's latest-breaking technology becomes tomorrow's obsession, demanding more time, attention, and ever-increasing distraction. Technology has become a powerful tool and 'everyone is doing it'..but maybe you feel like you've lost control in your own home. Does the chill down your spine tell you that something is terribly wrong? Do you feel like a beast has invaded your home, but you don't know how to handle it? If so, then join me as we talk together about the timely topic of taming the TECHNO-BEAST!

One day a terrible parent in your state may do something criminal to a child-and the media may push the narrative that because the child was homeschooled, more restrictions should be placed on homeschooling families. Let's look at a realistic solution to America's ethnic and cultural problems... Do the Word of God and the history of the Church help us navigate hostile territory? Certainly. Training Children who Live Out Their Highest Calling and Identity in Christ Amid a Corrupt Culture: Today, the enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy is after our children's very identity. In a godless culture, how do we equip children to hold fast the Lord, to stand with confidence in the true identity He has given them, and to refuse to let the culture shape them? How do we prepare children to reclaim lost ground, lead others in returning to the ways of the Lord, and rebuild the walls? Scripture provides practical answers for parenting and discipling a generation for such a time as this. Just as the Lord provided godly parents and mentors for Daniel, Esther, and Nehemiah, the Lord is equipping you to raise your children to do extraordinary, eternally impactful things in the kingdom. This session will explore the examples of scripture for generational discipleship and leave you encouraged as you equip your children to stand for truth and contend for the faith.

The plague of man is passivity. It kept Adam from loving his wife correctly, leading to the death of us all. Leadership is initiative. Leadership is taking action toward a goal. What actions must we take if we would lead ourselves, our families, and our world? In our short time together, we will discuss some first steps toward the leadership areas men are responsible for before God, to succeed as His stewards in this world.

At some time in our future, is it imaginable that freedom of speech and freedom of religion could be suppressed where we live? History would indicate so. How do we prepare ourselves and our families for such a contingency? What curriculum might best prepare us for persecution, even martyrdom? How do we cultivate necessary virtues without sparking burdensome fears? This may not be a pleasant subject to contemplate, but perhaps it will be an important one.

Is Education a neutral subject? Does God have a preference for how He wants children to be educated? What does the Bible teach about schooling? Is there one correct path for education? Are public schools a viable option for Christians? Why do you homeschool? When your children are grown, what will define success for you? What is the difference between a Biblical view of education, and the way most Christian parents (even homeschoolers) educate their children? These questions and more will be discussed in this engaging presentation.

This message is for anyone who is homeschooling a child that just doesn't seem to be "into" it. Books aren't really their thing, and the idea of writing is deplorable. Homeschooling homes are havens for teaching much more than just academia. Christian homes need to actively teach children for faith, integrity and faithfulness, sorely missing aspects in modern culture. Seeking to address the tension many families have in the day to day homeschooling, come find a new perspective to view academics as a facilitator, a supporting role to the greater mission of raising our children for Christ. Come explore why the home is truly the best place for children to flourish and for families to pass on the faith.

This session will explore how our learning styles impact how we engage with Scripture and how changing the methods we use can help our kids learn about God in a more sustainable and impactful way.

For over ten years now, Todd has been reminding moms and dads of the truth behind homeschooling. He tell them it's about relationships and letting their children be what God has created them to be, and on and on and on.. Moms often come up and say, " I believe everything you say..but how do I do that? How do I homeschool in light of all these truths?" Well, Madam Homeschooler, Todd is going to show you. Join him as we get down to the nuts and bolts of homeschooling in light of these truths. Buckle your seat-belts and hold onto your seats.

You don't know when it could be you. But knowing beforehand what to do when a caseworker knocks on your door can mean the difference between quickly resolving a child abuse / neglect investigation and watching helplessly as a caseworker takes your children away and puts them in a foster home. After helping more than a thousand families in abuse and neglect investigations, Scott offers wisdom based on experience. This presentation includes an easy-to-understand explanation of the 4th Amendment, six proven strategies, and instruction that may help you keep your family together should government agents appear on your doorstep.

Every family has a culture ... a way of living. And every family is defined by it. Are your family's mission and culture breathing life into your days? Being intentional and purposeful is the best way to make sure your mission aligns with your worldview. You'll leave this session armed with a list of practical ideas and an encouraged heart!

What sort of man did God want when He fashioned him from the dust? What does it mean to be made in the image of God? How does Jesus define for us the true definition of manhood? What are you seeking to become as a man of God? What target are you aiming your sons toward in their masculine journey? What scale will you use to weigh the young men seeking to marry your daughters? The Bible provides God's answers to these questions. Over coffee and donuts, we will consider together what God has revealed about these things from His Word.

Statistical research shows that approximately two-thirds of young people in America are leaving the church by the time they reach college age—with very few returning. In this keynote session, Ken Ham looks at data published in the book, Already Gone, which shows that a lack of teaching foundational apologetics and biblical worldview in churches and Christian homes is a leading cause for this mass departure. He compares this data with new statistical research published in the book, Ready to Return, showing that the millennial generation is more secularized in their worldview than ever. Millennials who currently attend church are going to be the voice of the Church in the future, and we need to do something before we lose another generation. By taking a strong stand on biblical authority, rooting out compromise, and teaching apologetics, we can reclaim lost and coming generations for Christ.

Is Education a neutral subject? Does God have a preference for how He wants children to be educated? What does the Bible teach about schooling? Is there one correct path for education? Are public schools a viable option for Christians? These questions and more will be discussed in this engaging presentation.

Most purity resources these days focus on girls, but purity tends to be a much larger problem for young men, and many seem hopelessly naive about the battles our sons are facing. Today’s young men grow up with challenges to their purity on every side. In a time when over 90% of teens have been exposed to Internet pornography, how can we teach our boys to keep their way pure? What can we do when temptation is lurking on friends’ phones and beckons just a click away? How can we give them a Biblical context for sexuality–from their toddler years to adulthood? Come hear the parents of six sons give you frank, practical advice on raising your son to be a virtuous knight.

Setting Them Free with Passion-Driven Learning: Scripture tells us to train up a child in the way “he” should go–not the way “they” should go. Every child is a unique creation of God, with his own fascinating blend of talents, interests and yes, weaknesses. To help them fulfill their life calling, we must develop a specific plan for the training of each one. Come and learn how to work “with” the uniqueness of your child. Escape the bondage of expectations and set your child free to pursue his passions and be the whole person God created him to be.

From scheduling to home organization, this workshop gives parents the confidence that they can provide a rich early education for their little ones. Lesli provides an overview of what every child from 3-7 needs to cover over the course of one year, and how to fit it all in. Lesli provides solutions for the many challenges parents with young learners face, such as time management and schooling multiple ages at the same time.

Are you a caregiver for an aging parent?  Are you facing care giving in the future?  Do you ever wonder if those little memory slips are old age or the sign of something worse? Even if you aren't actively caring for someone, most likely you know someone who is, since 34.2 million Americans reported caring for an elderly parent in 2015. Many of us are in the sandwich generation, caring for parents and young children at the same time.  Care giving, especially for those with dementia, takes a special kind of grace and fortitude.  Add in home schooling and young children, and you have the makings of a hairy mess.  Join Danielle Olander, home schooling mother of five, as she shares her family's on-going experiences caring for a parent with Alzheimer's.  Juggling schedules, locating resources, and finding time to recharge, caregivers need support, resources, and sometimes, just someone to listen.  This workshop is designed to bring encouragement to those who are caring for aging parents or for those who want to support those that are caregiving.

Science doesn’t need to be a boring subject of textbooks and vocabulary. This workshop (for parents AND KIDS) shows you fun ways to learn about the Lord’s sky above with hands-on learning activities.

Many people have the idea the battle between Christianity and humanism (or creation and evolution) is a battle over who has more “facts.” However, the real battle is actually over the interpretation of the same facts. Until Christians understand that everyone has the same facts, but different interpretations of those facts (based upon different presuppositions or biases), they will not be successful in learning how to defend the Christian faith and think in a true biblical manner. It’s very possible you will never think the same way about this world after attending this workshop!
