MP3# 23-412 Willamette 1 Homeschooling is a beautiful way to educate all minds, and it is particularly excellent for those with unique brain wiring. However, the problems associated with ADHD can be hard to recognize in a homeschooling environment since they don't manifest in the same manner as in institutional schooling. This workshop will shine a light on how ADHD shows up in the homeschool and how families can study it and support it so that these amazing minds can prosper even in the non-ADHD world. Attendees will receive a discount for "ADHD: See it, Study it, Support it!" Group Coaching with Rhea Finch, a Certified Professional ADHD Family Coach.

Do you have a child who is smart but does not feel like they are? Does your child speak poorly about themself or tell you they can't do something even before they try? Are they reluctant to try to learn something new for fear that they will not do it perfectly? Often, this is because they are afraid of forgetting, not being able to get it done fast or good enough or are afraid of disappointing their parents. This workshop will help you to better understand your child and help them see how truly smart and capable they are.

Twenty-two years ago, Marcia began using the Structure of Intellect (SOI) assessment to help each student and adult discover how they can do their best. She helps with visual, auditory, and sensory-balance enrichment; dyslexia intervention; screening for Irlen light sensitivity overload that may be causing problems with focusing, visual fatigue, headaches, reading delays; or a number of other possible challenges that can interfere with learning and behavior.

It can be intimidating to think about educating a kid who’s blowing the curve, racing ahead, and seems to want more. Can you really meet his needs, or would he be better off with professionals? How can you help him fit in socially? Should he graduate early or on time? Hal and Melanie were involved in gifted programs in school, and had several precocious children themselves. You can meet the needs of your bright child and enjoy doing it!

Oregon is blessed to have private homeschool options for families with special needs students. The Privately Developed Plan (PDP) is an evaluation option provided in Oregon for home school students with qualified disabilities. This session will explain how the PDP is cooperatively written by an academic advisor and the parents, and how the plan identifies, addresses, and measures student progress.

Topics: Special needs

This session focuses on the use of evidence-based instruction methods that address the core issues of autism spectrum disorders: communication and social skills. It integrates developmental perspectives and strategies to provide practical, functional intervention approaches that you can easily implement within your daily homeschool routine.

Unpack the frequently asked questions of how to homeschool struggling learners and those who learn differently. Be encouraged and equipped with diagnostic checklists for struggling learners and discussing common roadblocks homeschooling parents face (and how to navigate around them). Receive strategies for achieving success with your children who learn differently.

One in six people has a little-known condition called Irlen Syndrome that interferes with reading and learning. The fix is accommodations that use specific colors of plastic overlays, colored paper, adjusting screens, and precision-tinted lenses if there are extra environmental issues that trigger headaches or other health concerns. If you or your child lose your place reading, need to re-read, get visual fatigue, or possibly become anxious, concentrate poorly, or get headaches/migraines in bright light (or other symptoms), you will want to attend this workshop presented by Robin Firth, RN and fully certified Irlen Diagnostician. Presented by Positive Learning Solutions, LLC

This session offers an overview of learners who are gifted and who also have some form of disability or learning challenge. You'll be equipped with a broader understanding of how different exceptionalities can manifest themselves within learning styles and preview resources that match your child's unique learning profile. Ultimately the goal of this workshop is to provide you with support so you can spend less time searching for information and resources and more quality family time with your child.

Presented by Help Eliminate Learning Problems

As the Director of Help Eliminate Learning Problems (HELP, Inc.), Bill Hartner has a unique perspective of seeing learning problems from both sides. Bill will give a fascinating look at the right brain and left brain and why balancing the two is so important to effective learning. You’ll learn how concentration, focus, time management, cause-and-effect thinking and organization can be improved by integrating more left-brain critical thinking into the learning process.

Bill has been HELP’s Director for 34 years. HELP is a not for profit organization located on the campus of Marylhurst University between West Linn and Lake Oswego and provides testing and drug-free treatment for children and adults with learning and processing problems. For more information about HELP, check helpadd.com or call 503-635-3389 for an evaluation appointment.

Have you ever wondered if you or anyone you know has dyslexia? If so, you are not alone. dyslexia affects approximately 1 in 5 people. As a mom and home educator of a dyslexic learner, Joann has experienced the worry and frustration of watching her bright and creative child struggle, even though he tries hard. As a person with dyslexia, she has experienced the difficulties and benefits first-hand.

This presentation will encourage you on your journey. Dyslexia is a distinctive difference, not a divisive deficit. Using the most reliable research, we'll cover the basics of identifying, re-mediating, and accommodating. We will also cover the gifts and strengths of the dyslexic mind - because, yes, those exist too!

All children have special needs, but some have more challenges than others. Learn how to adapt and plan an effective curriculum so that your child shows measurable progress. Explore the stumbling blocks that can prevent true learning. Don't waste money and time buying the wrong curriculum. This is a great session for parents of more than one child. You'll learn how to adapt curriculum to fit more than one student.

Faith will share diagnostic checklists for struggling learners, common roadblocks homeschooling parents face, and help you navigate around those, as well as share strategies for success with your children who learn differently. In addition, she will provide an overview of HSLDA’s Struggling Learner/Special Needs Department and the many resources they provide to both members and non-members.

Topics: Special needs

This workshop offers practical resources, lists of materials, and curricula in order to help equip you as you work with a struggling learner in your home school. Multi-sensory teaching methods, direct instruction, modeled teaching, and “scaffolding” instruction are shared, as well as ideas for designing a unique home instruction program tailored to your child’s specific challenges.

This workshop addresses some of the challenges associated with homeschooling struggling or atypical learners in the high school years. Do you have questions such as, “How do I award my child with special needs a diploma?” or “What do I do since my child with dyslexia can’t read typical high school level material?” Faith discusses alternative course work, specialized curricula and learning materials, assistive technology, transcript options, possible graduation guidelines/high school programs for special learners, post-high school options, as well as offer tips for navigating the process of applying for testing accommodations for the college boards.

Does your child have a learning disability or perhaps severe special needs? Have you pulled your child out of public school where he used to have an IEP (individual education plan)? Participants will learn the purposes and benefits of writing an SEP, student education plan, the homeschool version of an IEP. This workshop also provides guidance in how to draft an SEP. Participants will look at sample student education plans, receive a template of a Student Education Plan, and a resource list of books that will assist them in drafting their own homeschool student education plan.

Faith will define what dyslexia is (and what it is not), discuss the different types of dyslexia as well as levels of struggle (mild, moderate, severe), and then offer hope by sharing the types of necessary teaching methods, specific, research-based interventions and programs that can be implemented in homeschool setting. Hope and encouragement are offered, in addition to right brain “tricks” and strategies for success to add to your teaching toolkit!

Have you ever heard “All children are gifts from God” only to roll your eyes and think “Ha! They don’t know what goes on in my house!” If you don't look for God's gifts in your child, you may be missing some of His best. Come laugh and be encouraged to see what God had in mind when He designed your child. Learn to see your child through God’s spectacles and to stay focused on God’s vision of your child...not the world’s.

“Why isn’t this child learning as well as my other children? What am I doing wrong?" When a child seems bright but is not learning as fast as his peers, the problem could be a learning disability. This session explains the symptoms of learning disability and how to determine if this is the problem. Teaching methods, curriculum selection, and specialized tutoring will also be discussed.

OR-2010 Educating for Eternity

Presented by: Oregon Christian Home Education Association Network

Rick Boyer and his wife have been home schooling since 1980. Starting out young and green in a time when only a handful of families was home schooling, Rick and Marilyn found few resources to help them in their journey. They had to blaze their own trail, surviving such obstacles as skeptical grandparents, hostile school authorities, unhelpful curriculum publishers, blizzards, Indian attacks&(just kidding). The Boyers are still home schooling today and now share their experiences around the world through their books and their speaking ministry. Rick will share some of the most profound lessons learned along the way, including: -It's not schooling, it's discipleship -Life is the curriculum -The kid is the can -Socialization is for socialists -George Washington survived without Little League -and many more!

"Why isn't this child learning as well as my other children? The other kids all learned to read using this curriculum, what am I doing wrong?" When a child seems bright but is not learning at the same rate as his/her peers a learning disability could be the reason. This session will explain the symptoms of a learning disability and how to determine when this is the problem. Teaching methods, curriculum selection and specialized tutoring will also be discussed.

One of the major differences between struggling students and super learners is their ability to process information. If your child struggles with attention span, directions, phonics, letter, number, or word recognition, comprehension, composition, social skills, language, visual attending, word problems, or thinking skills, he or she may have a processing challenge. The good news is that processing ability can be developed to greater levels. In this session you will learn how to test and enhance your child’s processing ability. Come to be encouraged by the possibilities to change your child life.

Topics: Special needs

Even if your child has a learning related diagnosis, such as Sensory Integration Disorder, Autism, Developmental Delay, CAPD, PDD, ASD, Asperger Syndrome, Down Syndrome (or another chromosome disorder), MMR, Brain Injured, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Language Delay, or Cerebral Palsy, you can successfully teach him or her at home. You can make excellent progress, if you will address the root causes of his or her learning difficulties. This workshop will teach you how to identify areas for remediation and give you specific activities that you can use to help your child to become a better learner.

Topics: Special needs

For children to be efficient learners with good long term memory, they need to have well organized brains. Academic or attention challenges, letter or word reversals, difficulty retaining academics, lack of coordination, stuttering or stammering, disorganization or emotionality are often symptoms of brain disorganization. Applicable to “normal”, “gifted” and “struggling” students, the information in this session may help you discover underlying causes of troublesome symptoms and give you some ideas that may help your children.

The HEART of Home Education

Presented by: Oregon Christian Home Education Association Network

Chris speaks to the hearts of home school fathers and mothers urging them to teach their children what really matters. Chris Klicka calls all homeschoolers to draw closer to the Lord and seek him with their whole heart. As an attorney, Chris Klicka has been battling for the right of parents to homeschool since 1985, and has been battling multiple sclerosis since 1994. He walks the talk as he shows how we must live in light of eternity and make every single day count. As a homeschool father of seven, Chris speaks from both his heart and many years of practical experience. He describes how we must understand suffering and how we are commanded to share the gospel as a family and as individuals virtually everyone we meet. He helps us all to return to our "first love" and establish a close relationship with our Lord and Savior. Chris explains that you're not homeschooling for homeschooling sake, but for the glory and honor of God. We can delegate authority to teach our children to someone else, but we can never delegate the responsibility.

Many people succeed in school but fail in the real world outside. Real education prepares the student for every aspect of life - practical, professional, spiritual, economic, civic. Chris Klicka, home school attorney and father of seven, will present scores of biblical references which demonstrate how God requires our children to be nurtured and educated. The main purpose of this talk is to help homeschoolers develop a lasting commitment to homeschooling as the means to best train our children in God's ways. He will explain how the agenda and philosophy of the "movers and shakers," past and present, in public education are diametrically opposed to this. Chris will encourage us to keep up the fight and train our children to be leaders of tomorrow who have been taught not only to believe like Christians, but also to think like Christians. Chris will also urge the audience to sound the warning to other Christians to remove their children from the public schools. Chris proves his case very convincingly and this has become one of his most popular talks.

Parents of children with disabilities experience many challenges associated with having and teaching a child with learning problems.
