In 1925 the U.S. Supreme Court said children are not mere creatures of the state. The 1945 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes that parents have the “prior right” to decide what kind of education their children will have. Is homeschooling a “human right” of the first order? HSLDA Staff Attorney, homeschooling father of seven, and Director of International Affairs Michael Donnelly explores this question and shares a presentation he delivered at the world’s largest human rights conference on the philosophy of law and social philosophy. In this talk, Donnelly examines philosophies on the relationship between the family and the state and looks at how human rights doctrine is applied globally towards homeschooling.

Tracy Klicka identifies common causes of stress in homeschooling and family life, and provides helpful ideas on how to deal with stress from a godly perspective. Included in her talk are the issues of lifestyle, use of time, and getting help.

In this session, Tracy Klicka emphasizes the foundational importance of cultivating your child’s relationship with God. She will discuss the importance of reaching the heart of your child through study of the Word, prayer, and open, honest communication. She will share special encouragement for the toddler and teen years.

Struggling herself with the frustrations and interruptions that seven children inevitably bring, Tracy Klicka has a strong desire to encourage other moms not to forget their number—one priority. She shares realistic ways a mother can find time to walk with her Lord in this busy season of life.

In this workshop, Tracy Klicka will discuss the wisdom of doing “all things decently and in order,” and will highlight principles of ordering one’s day and organizing the home for the glory of God.

Tracy Klicka hasn’t met a homeschool mom yet who at some point in her homeschooling experience doesn’t desperately want to quit. Sometimes it seems the challenges are more than we can take, but there is hope. Be encouraged not just to survive, but to thrive in raising children for the Lord.

By understanding your child's learning style, determining an educational approach and deciding on objectives, you will be able to make a better decision when choosing curriculum.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the Reggio Emilia approach to Early Childhood Education. Created in Northern Italy following WWII by Loris Malaguzzi, Reggio is very popular around the world as we realize that children are not empty vessels but people with great potential who are capable and full of promise.

Children who are given lots of love, affection and clear boundaries become very secure learners who feel safe and valued in their everyday learning. Undaunted by failure, these children learn quickly because they view every day as an adventure to be lived with their whole hearts!

Digestive, immune & metabolic conditions common in autism, ADHD and special needs can negatively impact development & behavior; learn about medical treatments to optimize learning.

In 1775 Patrick Henry said “give me liberty or give me death.” You know that the founders of our country were mostly Christian men who understood that liberty meant Christian liberty. But how much a part of our founding was the faith of our founders? John Hancock and John Adams’ battle cry was one of “No King but King Jesus.” While secular historians want to minimize the impact of the founders’ faith, the truth is that 93% of the founders were members of Christian churches. A knowledge of our history is critical if we are to ever recover our nation’s heritage. Michael Donnelly is an HSLDA Attorney and an Adjunct Professor at Patrick Henry College where he teaches constitutional law. Listen as he unearths the truth and import of the Faith of Our Founders.

Honing dialectic and rhetorical skills for our pre-teens and teens is difficult to accomplish on our own. How do we provide our children with these tools of learning while maintaining personal control of our homeschool? We believe that ultimately you cannot truly teach any subject in isolation. So how do we train our children to view all subjects as glorifying the Lord, in an integrated way, while also acquiring life-long learning skills? Learn more about our programs that come alongside to support you as a homeschooler in recovering the lost tools of learning.

Although we usually think of evaluating as testing, there are a multitude of methods to monitor progress that don’t involve paper and pencil and a 100 point scale. You can creatively evaluate how your child is doing in any given subject while clarifying expectations for both of you. Learn: what a “rubric” is and how to use it to effectively measure progress, subjective versus objective evaluations, how to define parameters while thinking outside the box, and hands-on creative tools to measure progress for multi ages. Come appreciate how to take the stress out of “grading” while enhancing your ability to evaluate and critique what your child is learning and understanding.

After a child is tested, the results are usually shown on a computerized printout containing columns of numbers in percentiles, standard scores, and stanines. These scores are often not fully understood, and as a result, the information is not used to shape instruction and guide decisions for a child’s educational program. In this workshop, Sarah will help parents interpret the significance of test scores and understand how to use the numbers to get a balanced view of the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Parents will gain a clearer understanding of the many types of achievement tests available, the differences between group and individualized testing, and the benefits of testing to monitor student progress and to guide instruction. Come to be encouraged and learn more from your child’s test scores.

College? And where do we find resources and apprenticeships to help guide homeschoolers through this process of vocational preparation and calling? The homeschooling community is not immune to the problems facing our society, including broken marriages and broken children. But, it’s never too late to try to fix something that’s broken. It may be easier to try to hide the pain than to confront essential elements required for “fixing” these complex and serious issues. HSLDA Staff Attorney and homeschooling father of seven Michael Donnelly was raised in a broken home and will explore the necessary ingredients to helping homeschooling families stay connected and whole amidst the pressures and stresses of life.

Today’s father has precious few waking hours that are spent going in countless directions to address seemingly great causes—not least of which is family. Our children have only one earthly father and our wives but one husband. How can we best invest our most precious resource time? And where should we be investing it for eternal value? How can we properly lead our families and serve God in an increasingly demanding and busy world of sports, music, drama, church, school, support groups, homeschool co—ops, extended family responsibilities, and ministry programs? How do we know when to say yes, and more important, when to say no? Must we choose between competing priorities to be effective stewards? Come hear thoughts on answering these questions from Mike Donnelly as he shares insights gained from his experiences as a father of six and as an army officer, entrepreneur, company executive and attorney for the Home School Legal Defense Association.
